Snack Bag with Tabs Tutorial

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

I have plans to use some of these snack bags at Tandy’s birthday party, so I’ve been sewing up a few here and there. Now that I have it down, I thought I’d share my process.

Materials:

  • 7” x 14” outer fabric
  • 7” x 12” lining fabric
  • 2 – 2” pieces of ribbon
  • 6” piece of hook and loop tape (Velcro)

lr-

Press the short end of the outer fabric 1.5” down (right sides together).

lr--2

Press the top piece back up 1” creating a single pleat. Repeat for the other short end of the outer fabric.

lr--3

Fold the ribbon piece in half and center the loop on the outer fabric tucking the raw ends under the pleat. Topstitch close to the folded edge.

lr--4

Sew the velcro pieces to each short end on the right side of the lining 1/2” in from the edges.

lr--5

Fold the lining in half right sides together. Stitch one side with a 1/2” seam allowance. On the other side stitch with a 1/2” seam allowance leaving a 2” opening for turning later.

lr--6

Fold the outer piece in half right sides together and stitch both sides with a 1/2” seam allowance.

lr--7

Clip the folded corners on both the lining and the outer pieces. Turn right side out and press.

lr--8

Turn the outside piece to the wrong side out and tuck the lining piece inside. The lining and outer piece should be right sides together. Aline the side seams. Sew around the top of the bags with a 3/8” seam allowance.

lr--9

Turn right sides out through the opening in the lining. Stitch the opening closed very close to the edge. Tuck the lining down inside the outer fabric and press well.

lr--10

Topstitch around the top of the bag. I also topstitch on top of my previous stitches just over the ribbon tab to secure the tab a little better for pulling.

My sweet hand model was happy to demonstrate.
